A passionate global citizen, she’s traveled to over 125 countries and has lived in five continents.

From Havana to Buenos Aires and beyond, Jewish life in Latin America is vibrant and diverse.

For more than 500 years, there has been a Jewish presence in Latin America, with the first synagogue (in Recife, Brazil) dating back to 1636. And though the Inquisition deeply impacted the region — leading to persecution and pushing many Jews to hide their identity — Jewish life also developed. Despite economic hardship and the recent global pandemic, Jews across Latin America are creating a Jewish future as dynamic as the region itself.

We’re proud to partner with Jewish communities across the region. JDC has sustained Jewish lives and built Jewish life in Latin America for over 70 years. During World War II, we helped Jews flee Nazi persecution and emigrate to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and beyond. And when Argentina’s economy collapsed in 2001, we provided humanitarian assistance to tens of thousands of vulnerable Jews who were plunged below the poverty line overnight. This assistance continues today, helping families facing financial hardship — often for the first time — as a result of the pandemic. We’re also committed to empowering local communities and catalyzing the next generation of Jewish leaders.

This Chanukah, we celebrate the miracle of Latin America’s Jewish communities, which found safety in the face of danger, persisted in the face of hardship, and continue to cultivate proud Jewish life.
